In an effort to save the lives of shelter animals across New York City, Adopt NY, a newly formed coalition of area animal rescue organizations, was launched this June to increase adoption at city shelters, promote animal welfare initiatives and expand outreach in communities across the city.

Founded by Rob and Bea Maher of Dog Habitat and Emily Tanen and Jeff Latzer of Project Pet, two NYC-based animal rescue organizations that routinely save local animals from the city shelter’s euthanasia lists, Adopt NY’s initial plan involves
“wide-reaching viral marketing campaigns and large-scale adoption events [giving] hardworking rescue groups proper venues to show off their animals,” says Latzer. “As we grow we will pursue related projects like Public Service Announcements to further connect with state residents and encourage local adoption.” Though based out of NYC, Adopt NY is a state-wide initiative which as of today already consists of 33 animal rescue organizations.

To achieve its goal of making NYC no-kill, Adopt NY plans to work with various existing organizations that share a common purpose, including the Shelter Reform Action Committee, Nathan Winograd’s No Kill Advocacy Center, and Urgent Death Row Dogs.

“We want to bring to the table a coalition that will bypass New York shelter systems and educate about and promote the adoption of animals in our state. People need to know not only that animals die every day for lack of exposure, but that adopting them is the most rewarding act imaginable,” said Latzer.

As part of Adopt NY’s introduction to the community, the coalition will be holding their first adoption event this coming Sunday, July 1 at Tompkins Square Park in the East Village from noon to 4 p.m.

The event will feature adoptable animals from 12 local animal rescue organizations [Anjellicle Cats Rescue - Bobbi and the Strays - Bruised Not Broken - Bully Project - Dog Habitat - Heavenly Angels Animal Rescue - Posh Pets Rescue - Project Pet, Inc. - Rescuzilla - Rebound Hounds ResQ - Select A Rescue - Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter - Zani’s Furry Friends], plus special guest DJs: Raimo, Yelagin and Richter. The event will be sponsored by Stella & Chewy’s pet food, a frequent supporter of animal welfare initiatives and the core sponsor of Adopt NY.

In order to increase adoptions at city shelters Adopt NY plans to promote in particular adoption among the most difficult shelter animals to place in homes.
