CONTINUED - NYC Development Targets Pet Owners…Part III
By Michael Mullins
Published August 28, 2012
When asked why the rider was implemented, the Gateway spokesperson said, “Our primary purpose behind the policy was to have pet owners register their dogs and/or pets with the management office. While some tenants have voiced disapproval there have also been many tenants that have voiced approval over our attempts to ask owners to register their pets and adhere to certain rules regarding behavior.”

When asked why then prohibit certain breeds and limit the amount of pets in each apartment if the reason for the measure was to have pet owners register their pet(s), the Gateway spokesperson replied in an email, “The breed restriction/number of pets allowed at the building has been put into effect to create a safe and comfortable living environment for Gateway residents, as LeFrak continues to make improvements to the property.”

When pressed by this reporter in an email to clarify LeFrak’s position on whether certain breeds of dog represent a safety risk to Gateway residents, there was no response.

This most recent change in pet policy at Gateway Plaza appears to be in direct contrast to Karen LeFrak, Richard LeFrak’s wife, who is a self-described “dog enthusiast” having written several children’s books that center around dogs. Ironically, under the new pet-policy at Gateway Plaza, Karen LeFrak would not be allowed to live in the building with her Standard Poodles, pictured here, which likely weigh more than 40 lbs each.

In September, Gateway Plaza’s tenant association is scheduled to meet with building management to discuss the rider along with other issues affecting tenants. Pet-owning residents at Gateway Plaza are hopeful that they’ll be able to resolve this policy change at that meeting.
